The largest bivalve mollusc in the Mediterranean, it can exceed 120 cm in height. It lives embedded in the seabed among the Posidonia meadows. Since 2016, a disease caused by a protozoan (Haplosporidium pinnae) has brought the species to the brink of extinction: a research group in the Sinis MPA is monitoring the last surviving specimens.
