Marine Protected Area

General aspects

The Marine Protected Area “Sinis Peninsula – Mal di Ventre Island” was established under Law 979 of 1982 (opens in a new window), integrated by Law 394 of 1991, by decree of the Ministry of the Environment of 12 December 1997, amended by the Ministerial Decree of 17 July 2003, updated by the Ministerial Decree of 20 July 2011, which updates the perimeter of the marine protected area, and by the Ministerial Decree no. 188 of 20 July 2011, the so-called regulation governing activities permitted within the marine protected area.

Aims

The establishment of the Marine Protected Area “Sinis Peninsula – Mal di Ventre Island” pursues the environmental protection of the area concerned and aims at the following objectives:

  • The protection and enhancement of the natural, chemical and physical features and of marine and coastal biodiversity, with particular attention to Posidonia oceanica, also through environmental restoration interventions;
  • The promotion of environmental education and the dissemination of knowledge of the marine and coastal environments of the marine protected area, also through the implementation of educational and informative programmes;
  • The implementation of programmes of study, monitoring and scientific research in the natural sciences and environmental protection sectors, in order to ensure systematic knowledge of the area;
  • The promotion of sustainable development of the area, with particular regard to the enhancement of traditional activities, local cultures and eco-friendly tourism, the channelling of tourist flows at sea and along the coastline, and the use of the area by socially sensitive groups, with the possibility that the aforementioned activities be carried out primarily or exclusively by resident citizens and by businesses and associations based in the Municipality of Cabras.

Managing body

The management of the Marine Protected Area “Sinis Peninsula – Mal di Ventre Island” has been entrusted by the Ministry of the Environment and Protection of Land and Sea to the Municipality of Cabras (opens in a new window) under the new Convention of 3 December 2013, lasting 9 years, which “governs the procedures for carrying out the management activities of the marine protected area”.

The first management agreement was signed on 5 February 1998.

  1. The President: the Mayor of the Municipality of Cabras with elected mandate
  2. The Director: Management Officer (private-law fixed-term employment contract)
  3. The Reserve Commission: guidance and/or supervisory body

Information office

Located on one of the main access roads to the village (Corso Italia), it provides a primary information and welcome service for the many visitors who come to the Municipality of Cabras. In particular, it offers an effective orientation service for a better stay in the Marine Protected Area through accurate information, distribution of informative materials and useful guidance on the main attractions, places to visit and the various services available for enjoying the area and the sea.
