Today, 9 May 2020, we celebrate World Migratory Bird Day 2020 (#WorldMigratoryBirdDay 2020), promoted by the Secretariat of the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) together with the Secretariat of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS). It has been held every year since 2006; you can find more information here (opens in a new window). We want to celebrate it by sharing these photographs taken a few days ago in our area. The first shows two migratory species that are sadly threatened by human activity and extremely rare to see. Here, we are lucky enough to be able to admire them together! They are the Audouin’s gull (Ichthyaetus audouinii) and the Kentish plover (Charadrius alexandrinus). The second shows a European bee-eater (Merops apiaster), a brightly coloured bird that nests at this very time of year in sand or earth banks, digging holes into them. Another demonstration of the richness of our biodiversity, which we must all continue to protect and preserve.
